March 23, 2020 Update

 

Firstly, I hope you are doing well! Staying healthy and ensuring that you are safe is the most important item at the moment. 

Second, I have many of my notes on my website (you can see many of the tabs on the left side of the screen). If you need a refresher on anything, you can review them. If anything is missing or you would like more information on anything, you can always email me at willians@pwcs.edu. I will always be available 8am-3pm weekdays, but I usually check more often. 

Secondly, students should continue to work on their StudyIsland and NoRedInk assignments (links can be found in the Important Links tab). These are good for practice and remembering material. I will be posting updates on assignments and work as soon as we have been given more information. I have talked with my colleagues and might even be developing a YouTube channel to do readings and other activities with students. I am also looking at using tools, such as Newsela and Nearpod (both available through Clever).

Lastly, all graded class assignments for quarter three are uploaded. All work up until now has been graded and entered into the gradebook, so if a student has an NHI (not handed in), I did not receive the assignment.  Students can still turn in the assignment via email so that their grade can be updated. If students need a copy of anything, please email me. 

All online lessons or practice work provided will cover objectives we have already taught this year.  Below you find a list of all those objectives.  Please note that all work and reading assignments are optional and will NOT be graded.

Unit 1 – Text features of Nonfiction

Objectives:

 

·         7.6 a)  Skim materials using text features including type, headings, and graphics to predict and categorize information.

 

Unit 2 – Main Idea in Nonfiction Texts
Objectives:

·         7.6 g)  Identify the main idea.

Unit 3 – Theme, Setting, Character, Point of View in Fictional Texts
 Objectives:

·         7.5 a)  Describe the elements of narrative structure including setting, character development, plot, theme, and conflict and how they influence each other.

·         7.5 b)  Identify and explain the theme(s).

·         7.5 d)  Differentiate between first and third person point-of-view.

 

Unit 4 – Word Choice, Figurative Language
 Objectives:

·         7.4 c)  Identify and analyze the construction and impact of figurative language.

·         7.4 d)  Identify connotations.

·         7.4 e)  Use context and sentence structure to determine meanings and differentiate among multiple meanings of words.

 

Unit 5 – Literary Device in Fictional Texts
Objectives:

·         7.5 g)  Describe the impact of word choice, imagery, and literary devices including figurative language in an author’s style.

 

Unit 6 – Inferences and Drawing Conclusions in Fiction and Nonfiction
Objectives:

·         7.5 i)  Make inferences and draw conclusions based on the text.

·         7.6 c)  Make inferences and draw logical conclusions using explicit and implied textual evidence.  

 

Unit 7 – Organizational Patterns of Nonfiction
Objectives:

·         7.6 b)  Identify an author’s organizational pattern using textual clues, such as transitional words and phrases. 

·         7.6 j)  Identify cause and effect relationships.

 

Unit 8 – Plot, Cause/Effect in Plot, Conflict in Fictional Texts
Objectives:

·         7.5 a)  Describe the elements of narrative structure including setting, character development, plot, theme, and conflict and how they influence each other.

·         7.5 c)  Identify cause and effect relationships and their impact on plot.

·         7.5 e)  Identify elements and characteristics of a variety of genres.

 

Unit 9 – Fact and Opinion in Nonfiction
Objectives

·         7.6 d)  Differentiate between fact and opinion.        

 

Unit 10 – Author’s Viewpoint, Purpose, Source in Nonfiction
Objectives:

·         7.6 e)  Identify the source, viewpoint, and purpose of texts.

·         7.6 f)  Describe how word choice and language structure convey an author’s viewpoint.

 

In addition to these reading objectives units, students have been practicing with a monthly list of roots and affixes to expand their vocabulary (7.4 b).  Also, as we have been responding in our writing journals as we’ve been practicing with our writing objectives (7.7 and 7.8).
